Grandma Horr’s Cookies
In 1949, my sisters, Tudy (3years), Jayne (5 years), and I (7 years) lived in Watertown, New York. Our Grandma, Nina Horr, lived with us and made the most wonderful, delicious cookies. Living in the “snow-belt”m there were many cold, snowy days that my sisters and I would “help’ grandma bake cookies. In those days of radio, Grandma would turn in on and listen to one of her favorite soaps, “Ma Perkins”.
Amidst the sounds of Ma Perkins giving wise advice to one of her children, we would carefully watch Grandma put together all sorts of ingredients and wait for that magic moment when Grandma would finally give my sisters and I the bowl, spoon and mixers to lick clean. Sometimes Grandma would give us each a spoonful of cookie dough; which in my mind, still today, is the only way to eat cookies.
The logo that we use is taken from an actual photo when Grandma was up at the lake and she was gardening. We asked her to pose on the scooter and we gave her a helmet. What you can’t see and is so endearing are the cut off jeans, nylons, rolled to her ankles and black orthopedic shoes. What a picture.
The smell of fresh baked cookies on cold, snowy days is a golden memory that will always be with me. This memory is a treasure that my sisters and I would like to pass on to you. We use Grandma Horr’s original recipes to make our delicious cookies and would like to share them with you, your family and friends. Grandma would be proud. |
